Arbor Day Foundation Honors Davie with Tree City USA® Recognition Growth Award

Davie, FL, May 24, 2010: The Town of Davie was recognized by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. It is the 19th year Davie has earned this national recognition.

Davie also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program in the following activity areas:

Planning and management
Wildlife habitat
Tree planting and maintenance
Street tree planting
Tree preservation

The prestigious Growth Award honors environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities. Davie also was awarded the 2009 Outstanding Urban Forester Program in Florida this past year.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Davie has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival

Davie recently hosted another Orange Blossom Festival in Downtown Davie. The festival featured over 250 displays and took place down Orange Drive from Davie Rd. west to SW 66th Terrace. Free activities included an arts & crafts show, fine arts show, western town, musical entertainment, Native American display, animal farm, western carriage display, commerce corner, motorcycle show, military vehicle display, and information displays.

Parts of Orange Drive to be Closed for Five Weeks

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) contractor will be closing Orange Drive at the 14500 block west of Boyscout Road. FDOT’s contractor will be making connection with the new bridge and Orange Drive. The closure is scheduled for Monday, April, 20th 2009 and will remain closed for five (5) weeks. The detour route will utilize Griffin Road, Westin Road and SW 36th Street.

“Generations of Taste,” presented by the Davie Historical Society and Old Davie School, is a tradition in Davie. Some of the best cooks in town (a few of whom are related to me) collaborate on this tasting party.

Davie Bike Rally

My family has been in the bike rally for years. In fact, in the beginning, our youngest daughter rode in a seat on the back of my bike. Davie has some of the nicest recreational trails in South Florida. The bike rally is a great time to get acquainted with them.

As predicted in the Farmer’s Almanac, the weather held up — although it looked like rain for a while.

We didn’t go inside this building. It looks like either a very righteous restaurant, or a church converted to a second life as a restaurant.
