    Celebrate Arbor Day at Pine Island Park in Davie

    The Town of Davie invites the public to celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day on January 21, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Town will be holding a Forestry Field Day at Pine Island Park located at 3801 South Pine Island Road where you will have the opportunity to plant trees, pot up trees in the new nursery, get information about volunteering with the South Florida Audubon Society, and learn about Backyard Wildlife Habitats. In addition, Davie residents will get to take home a free tree.

    Get your volunteer hours, learn horticultural tips, help out Davie, and have fun at the same time! Bring a shovel (if you have one) and work clothes to Pine Island Park at 9 a.m. to join us.

    Hang up the mistletoe and trim up the tree! Santa is on his way with lots of goodies for children at the Old Davie School Historical Museum, located at 6650 Griffin Road. The 10th Annual Old Davie Christmas will take place on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Kids will have the opportunity to visit with Santa, go for pony rides, enjoy a petting zoo, have a tasty lunch, play old-fashioned games, and more. In addition, the Davie Area Land Trust will present children’s author, Harvey E. Oyer III, to host a storytelling session. This fun-filled day is made possible by the efforts of the Davie Historical Society and the Davie School Foundation.

    “We are so pleased to be presenting the 10th Annual Old Davie Christmas,” said Historical Society President, Rosie Anderson. “This is a great time for the little ones.”

    Davie Town Hall is Official Drop-Off Location for U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

    The Town of Davie will participate in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program by providing an official drop-off location at Davie Town Hall located at 6591 Orange Drive and at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center at 3801 South Pine Island Road.

    New, unwrapped toys for boys and girls can be dropped off at Town Hall and the Pine Island Multipurpose Center from November 28, to December 16, 2011, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

    The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys each year, and to distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. For information about Toys for Tots, go to www.toysfortots.org.

    Town of Davie HOPE Outreach Center Thanksgiving Basket Drive

    The Town of Davie is hosting a Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive in an effort to assist HOPE Outreach Center in providing 200 families with a Thanksgiving dinner this year. [1. HOPE Outreach Center is located at 4700 S.W. 64th Avenue (Davie Road), and is a 501(c) nonprofit organization that develops and provides services that impact the quality of life for individuals and families in our community. HOPE Outreach Center is a member of the Town’s Neighborhood Service Center and is a local approach to meeting the needs of our residents by providing better access and expanding our level of service.]

    The following items are suggestions to be included in each Thanksgiving Basket. This list and additional information can be found at http://hopeoutreachfl.org.

    • 2 (15 oz.) cans of green beans
    • 2 (15 oz.) cans of sweet corn
    • 1 (15 oz.) can mixed vegetables
    • 1 (40 oz.) cans of yams
    • 2 (16 oz.) cans of turkey gravy
    • 2 (16 oz.) cans of cranberry sauce
    • 2 (16 oz.) cans of black beans
    • 1 (lg. can) baked beans
    • 1 (15 oz.) box of instant mashed potatoes
    • 1 (14 oz.) or 5 lb. box of minute white rice or bag of rice
    • 2 (6 oz.) boxes/bags of stuffing
    • 6 individual cups of applesauce
    • 1 (lg. can family size) peaches or fruit cocktail
    • 1 (lg. bag) cookies
    • 1 (lg. box) crackers (e.g. saltines)
    • 1 (package) napkins
    • 1 (4 pack) toilet paper
    • 1 (28 oz.) jar peanut butter
    • 1 (lg. jar) grape/strawberry jelly
    • 1 (jar or can) peanuts
    • 1 (lg. bag) chips
    • 1 (box or lg. bag) popcorn
    • 1 (lg. box) cereal
    • 1 gal. or large box juice
    • 1 bottle vegetable oil
    • Anything fun and festive

    You may add paper goods and other items to the baskets as you wish. We only ask that the items listed above except for gift cards are placed in either a plastic storage container with lid (18 or 20 gallon), or an 18”x18”x16” box. If possible, please include a $25 gift certificate for the turkey. If all of the items are not included in each basket, please do not seal the box. If you can’t purchase all the items on the list, please donate whatever you can. Gift cards to supermarkets and financial contributions of any size are always appreciated.

    The following Town locations will accept donations from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday –Friday from now until November 18, 2011. In addition, donations will be accepted at the Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Davie Town Council Meeting at 6:30 p.m.

    Town of Davie 2011 Flood Mitigation Efforts

    September 28, 2011, Davie Florida: The Town of Davie has completed its annual progress report that evaluates its implementation of the Broward County Local Mitigation Strategy. This report was submitted by Administration to the Davie Town Council.

    The report reviews 13 action items that were proposed for completion in FY2011. It notes that 12 items are ongoing. The Town has completed a flood outreach project that encompassed the entire community. The project was included in the summer issue of the Town’s magazine, the Davie Update.

    Copies of this report are available at Town Hall, 6591 Orange Drive and the Davie/Cooper City Library, 4600 S.W. 82nd Avenue.

    REV. DARRELL A. STUEHRENBERG APPRECIATION DAY

    Do you ever marvel at how “time flies?” So do I. Can’t believe how “REV. DARRELL A. STUEHRENBERG APPRECIATION DAY” passed by without me making mention of it earlier. Anyway, here’s the text of the official proclamation making July 13, 2011 a holiday in Davie, Florida:

    PROCLAMATION

    WHEREAS, Reverend Darrell A. Stuehrenberg was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota on April 8, 1951, the oldest of four children; and
    WHEREAS, Reverend Stuehrenberg married Linda Olson in 1972 and that marriage was blessed with three children: sons, Christopher (Kit) and Bryce, and daughter, Tina; and
    WHEREAS, shortly after his graduation from the seminary, he received his call to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Davie, Florida; and
    WHEREAS, during his time at Gloria Dei, a number of church and school building programs were accomplished including establishing a mission congregation at St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1988, and creating a pre-school in 1979 that was later expanded into an elementary and middle school; and
    WHEREAS, Reverend Stuehrenberg helped begin a Crisis Pregnancy Center in Southwest Broward County, whose first location was in downtown Davie, and has continued to be active with the Crisis Pregnancy ministry; and
    WHEREAS, Reverend Stuehrenberg helped form Davie’s Emergency Assistance Service Effort “EASE”, a charitable organization serving the local Davie community and beyond; and
    WHEREAS, he has been an active member of both the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club and the local Chamber of Commerce; and
    WHEREAS, Reverend Stuehrenberg concluded his thirty three years of pastoral ministry at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on July 31, 2010; and
    WHEREAS, on August 1, 2010, he began serving Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Florida in a part time capacity and commutes several days a week from his home in Davie to serve this Fort Myers congregation.
    NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Davie do hereby proclaim July 13, 2011 as:

    REV. DARRELL A. STUEHRENBERG APPRECIATION DAY

    IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of July, 2011.

    Experience the Generations of Taste at the Old Davie School!

    Davie Historical Society Hosts Tasty Event

    The Davie Historical Society will host the 13th Annual Generations of Taste from 6-8 p.m., on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum located at 6650 Griffin Road.

    Cooks are invited to submit their favorite homemade dish from any of the following categories: drinks, appetizers, soups, salads, breads, vegetables, main dishes, desserts, country cookin’, and kid’s cookin’.

    Come and taste unlimited samplings and vote for your favorite dish. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening.

    The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 5 to 11. All proceeds benefit the Old Davie School Historical Museum. For more information, please call the museum office at 954-797-1044.
